Gungdo Principles
The basic arts and mindset of Gungdo.
1) Seon chal ji hyeong, hu gwan pung sae (선찰지형,후관풍세) :
First, the terrain around the target, and look at the direction and intensity of the wind.
2) Bi jeong bi pal, hyung heo bok sil (비정비팔 흉허복실) :
Lay your foot not a right angle and not straigth for target, and your chest is emptied and your stomach is flexed.
3) Cheon chu tae san, hu ak ho mi (전추태산 후악호미):
Push the Zoomtong (the part you holds the bow at) forward as if he were pushing a mountain, grab string so much strong as like grab the tiger’s tail for you life.
4) Bal ee bu jung, ban gu jae gi (발이부중 반구제기) :
If the arrow doesn’t hit the target by shooting, you should find the clue at your own posture and mindset not others.
Gungdo 9 Rules
The spirit and manners to be observed in the field of archery, as well as the spirit to be gained through the training of archery.
1) In-Ae-duk-haeng 인애덕행 : show virtuous, benevolent deeds with love.
2) Seong sil gyum son 성실겸손: Be humble and sincere. Diligent and humble
3) Ja jung jeol jo 자중절조: Be careful in your behavior and firmly observe your incision and support. Self-control
4) Yae oi eom so 예의엄수 : strictly observe good manners.
5) Yum jik gwa gam 염직과감: Straight and clean, brave and strong in determination.
6) Seop sa mu eon 습사무언: At shooting time, keep silent even other’s shooting
7) Jeong sim jeong gi 정심정기: Keep your body, energy and mind straight at all times.
8) Seung ja bul won 승자불원: Do not blame the winner for the game.
9) Mak man ta gung 막만타궁: Do not touch or pull others’ bows.
